Natural Sleep, Through Nature’s Way

Natural Sleep, Through Nature’s Way

The human body is one of the greatest miracles of nature. It is a complex mechanism, which works seamlessly through the continuous reaction, transaction and actions of a large number of chemicals and materials present within it. When any of these chemicals or actions fall out of sync or their nature is altered in respect to their quantity, the body indicates the change through discomfort or falling sick.

Many things affect these changes in the body. Today’s fast-track lifestyle with less time for nutritious diets and longer stressful work hours are key triggers that disrupt the normal functioning of the human body. Amongst other ailments, the dysfunction results in poor sleeping cycles and incomplete sleep. Another crucial reason for sleep cycles getting disturbed is the use of technology such as cellphones, iPads and laptops, right before sleeping.

SLEEP

Sleep is one of the most craved and loved aspect of the body’s daily cycle.  Almost everybody knows that sleep is the body’s time and way to repair itself and relax the mind.  When there is no sleep or poor quality sleep it can have a direct effect on your health. Let us get a deeper understanding of what sleep is and what are the stages.

What is sleep?

Sleep is a naturally recurring state of mind. It is characterized by the following:

  1. Change in the level of consciousness
  2. Reduced physical activity
  3. Relaxation of nearly all voluntary muscles
  4. Reduced interactions with surroundings

When we sleep, our ability to perceive and react to stimuli is also reduced. Sleep is very important as it takes care of the repair and maintenance of the body. However, in these days of hectic or stressful lifestyle, most people do not enjoy quality sleep or deep sleep.

What are the different types of Sleep?

All sleep is not the same. During sleep, multifaceted alterations occur in the brain. There are two main types of sleep: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) sleep, which has four stages. During non- REM sleep, sleep progresses from stage 1 (the lightest level, when the sleeper can be awakened easily) to stage 4 (the deepest level).

Adults spend around 80% of their sleep time in Non-REM sleep.  When we sleep through the night, we go through four stages of non-REM sleep, and then briefly experience REM sleep. This cycle repeats itself every 90 minutes or about 5-6 times each night.

Where’s My Sleep!!

Adults need about 7-9 hours of sleep every day. If we are not able to get enough sleep and complete these cycles, our body and mind both suffer. Prolonged poor sleep cycles result in irritability, lack of concentration, drop in overall health, fatigue, weight loss or weight gain and many times, more serious ailments too.

There are many reasons why we may not be able to get enough sleep. It could be related to stress, excitement or nervousness about something, eating habits, age or other diseases. Some people don’t fall asleep at all while others manage to fall asleep but can’t stay asleep all termed as sleep disorders. Whichever the case, people often turn to medicines for help.

Sleeping pills – do they help?

Most of the sleep-regulating medicines are available only through a doctor’s prescription because of their side effects and habit-forming nature. Plus they are often so powerful that they keep you drowsy through the day even after you have got up. One almost doesn’t feel fresh even after a whole night’s sleep.

In order to fall asleep and stay asleep, we rely upon neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) produced by our body. The neurotransmitters are responsible for our good sleep. They ensure that we fall asleep and stay asleep. Sleep inducing and sleep maintaining medicines promote production of neurotransmitters in the body. Thus, these medicines pose the threat of addiction and misuse, which the medical fraternity and the Government recognize. These factors present a problem for those who want to get quality restful sleep on regular basis.

Setting Aside the Side-Effects

While one may take medicines for the sake of sound sleep, one should not depend on them entirely. All the side effects of modern sleep medicines can be bypassed by relying upon natural sleep regulators.

A healthy lifestyle, which includes, nutritious timely diet, exercise, ample time with family and recreation via hobbies, etc. is important for a healthy sleeping cycle, and one should inculcate these practices in their routine.

Since ages, many rishis in India have introduced us to various herbs, which help us to fall asleep naturally and help us to be fresh and energetic during the day. As these are naturally available there is no chance of having side effects or addictions as our bodies are naturally programmed to be able to use natural ingredients.

The various herbs which help to induce sleep are:
